Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is cynical about love and hates romantic comedies, until one day an accident means that she ends up living inside of one. It's a tale of love and female friendship because sometimes the love that women have for each other is greater than any romantic relationship could ever be. Her friend Blair (Brittany Snow) is stuck in a loveless relationship and Erin (DeWanda Wise) is too scared to admit that she's actually in love with her girlfriend. To get over her heartbreak Jenny gets her girls together for one last hurrah before she moves away to San Francisco. In untraditional rom-com style, the story starts with Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) being dumped by her boyfriend of nine years after getting a promotion that requires a cross-country move. In came Netflix, who have given us a resurgence of rom-coms, and not just your typical white heterosexual rom-com either! There are LGBTQ+ leads and people of colour in starring roles and there are plus size protagonists who are not defined by their weight. running through the airport and stopping weddings? Yes, please. We want meet-cutes and kissing in the rain. This all changed when people started to question the lack of romance in the cinema.
The beloved rom-com slipped further down peoples radars, instead of being reserved exclusively for made-for-TV films and really bad limited cinema releases. Instead of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, people were opting for superheroes and action films.
